FAQ
x
What are the specifications?
Capacity 15 oz, material fine ceramic, heat-sensitive color changing coating, 36 pieces per case.
Can I order fewer than a full case?
No. A case is 36 pieces and that is the smallest quantity we sell. We do not split cases.
Is the coating safe for hot drinks?
Yes. ORCA Coatings is FDA certified food safe and SGS certified to 3,500 dishwasher cycles. The color changing layer is designed for exactly this use, since the effect only appears once hot liquid is in the mug.
How do I press a color changing mug?
In a mug press, the same as any 15 oz ceramic body. The one difference is checking your work: the artwork will not be visible on the black surface when the press opens, so pour hot water into a test unit from every new case rather than judging the result cold.
What temperature and time should I press this at?
We recommend pressing at 365 to 390°F (185 to 200°C) for 120 to 180 seconds in a mug press at medium pressure, with the image mirrored. These are recommended settings only, not fixed rules. Temperature and time work against each other: a hotter press needs less time and a cooler one needs more. Every heat press runs a little differently, so press one test piece and adjust for your machine. Our sublimation time and temperature chart lists settings for 20 blank types.
Who buys color changing mugs in bulk?
Novelty and gift retailers, print on demand sellers, fan and fandom merchandise lines, and corporate teams wanting a giveaway that gets a reaction rather than one that gets stacked in a cupboard.
Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
ORCA Coatings is SGS certified to 3,500 dishwasher cycles, UV resistant and FDA certified food safe. Items with metallic trim must never be microwaved.
How fast do orders ship?
Most orders ship within 24 hours. We have warehouses in Fremont, CA and Kentucky, so your order ships from whichever location gets it to you fastest.
Does the color change effect work the same at 15 oz?
The coating behaves identically. What changes is the design brief: a larger black surface means more area that reads as blank before hot liquid is added, so the reveal is more dramatic but the mug looks emptier cold. Plan the artwork for both states. Our wholesale coffee mug guide covers the plain 15 oz bodies if you want a mug that reads the same hot or cold.
Which color mug style sells best to my customers?
It depends on who is buying. Team and school orders choose by color, baby showers lean toward pink and light blue, weddings follow the event palette, and brands match their logo color. Our color mug buyer guide matches each accent style to the buyer who orders it.
How many mugs do I need to sell to pay back a case?
Fewer than most new shops expect. At $15 a mug, a case of 36 standard 11 oz white mugs is usually paid back by the fourth or fifth sale. Our mug ROI guide works through what you pay per case, what the case sells for and what you keep for six popular mug blanks.
