Every sublimation product you sell depends on a layer most buyers never think about. Sublimation dye bonds to polymer, not to ceramic or steel, which means the coating is not a finishing touch on a blank. It is the reason the blank works at all. Coating Grades: What Actually Changes

The Black ORCA 11 oz. white ceramic mug is the clearest example of what the top grade buys you. It is the most ordinary shape in the catalogue, an 11 oz white mug, which is exactly why the coating has nowhere to hide: there is no colour, no texture and no interesting silhouette to distract from how the print actually lands. At about $1.82 per unit and 36 to a case, it is also the blank most shops use to benchmark a supplier before committing to anything larger.

Grade is rarely the right place to economise, and the arithmetic is why. On a 36-unit case, saving a few cents per blank amounts to a couple of dollars. One rejected piece wipes that out, and rejects on a weak coating do not arrive evenly: they cluster on exactly the jobs with large flat colour, which tend to be the jobs a customer is paying most for.

Grade matters differently depending on what you print. A small logo on a mug is forgiving; a full-bleed photograph across a 1000-piece puzzle or a 12 x 12 in. tile is not. Large flat regions are where a weak coating shows first, because there is nothing in the artwork to distract from a colour shift or a band across the surface.

This is also why buying on unit price alone tends to cost more in the end. A blank that is fifteen cents cheaper but produces one rejected piece in twenty has erased the saving several times over, and the rejects usually come after the customer has already seen them.

The Failure Mode Nobody Diagnoses Correctly

Short answer: Dull reds, a yellow cast in white areas, blurred edges and visible banding are coating problems. New decorators almost always blame the printer, the ink or the colour profile first, and can spend weeks troubleshooting equipment that was never at fault.

It is worth stating plainly because it is the single most expensive mistake in this industry. A shop buys inexpensive blanks, gets muddy results, and starts changing variables: new ICC profile, different paper, higher temperature, longer dwell. Some of those changes make things marginally better, which reinforces the wrong conclusion. The blanks were the problem the whole time.

The diagnostic is simple. Press the same file, on the same printer, with the same settings, onto a blank you trust and a blank you are testing. If the trusted blank comes out right, the equipment is fine. Doing that once at the start of a supplier relationship costs one blank and saves weeks.

Durability and Compliance

Coating Brand or Reseller: Why It Changes What You Get

Short answer: Most sublimation suppliers buy coated blanks from whichever factory offered the best terms that season. Photo USA develops and owns the ORCA formulation. That is the difference between a supplier who can tell you what is on your blank and one who is passing along whatever arrived.

The practical consequence shows up on a reorder. If a distributor's source changes between your first order and your second, the coating can change with it, and nobody in the chain necessarily knows.
